Europe's AI rulebook entered another important phase in 2026, combining new transparency duties with a package designed to simplify implementation for businesses.

Electricity is becoming a central input to the digital economy. Data centres, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, cooling and advanced manufacturing are increasing demand at the same time that many economies are trying to electrify transport and buildings.

The digital divide used to be described mainly as the difference between people who had internet access and those who did not. That definition is now too narrow. A person can be online and still be digitally disadvantaged if the connection is slow, expensive, unreliable or paired with weak digital skills.
